Dr. Michael Garone went to Union College (New York), where he earned departmental honors in biology after spending 2 years doing research in the field of endocrinology. After college, he spent the next year doing research in epidemiology at Harvard Medical School. He then went on to attend the Albany Medical College, where he earned an MD degree. Dr. Garone then completed his training in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. While at GWUH, he was involved in pancreatic disease and bile salt research. After completion of his training and becoming board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology, he decided to open his own practice in Fairfax County. After establishing a very successful practice, he merged with another group, which was the foundation for the current group practice.

Dr. Garone spent several years working as a member of the Fairfax County Medical Society and as a delegate for the Medical Society of Virginia. Over the years, Dr. Garone has served as Chief of Gastroenterology at Fair Oaks Hospital, served on many INOVA-related hospital committees, and continues to spend time teaching medical students, residents and fellows in gastroenterology. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, Medical Society of Northern Virginia, Medical Society of Virginia, and serves on the medical advisory committee of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America's national capital area chapter. He has been recognized as one of the area's top gastroenterologists by several publications, including The Washingtonian, Northern Virginia Magazine and Checkbook Magazine.
