Board Certified in Gastroenterology
Dr. Tonya Adams knew at an early age that she wanted a career in health care. After three years in the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan, she changed majors to pre-med. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology, Dr. Adams was accepted at the Medical College of Ohio, where she completed her Doctor of Medicine degree. In medical school, she was awarded the Pathology Student Fellow Award and spent a year student teaching and clinical research.
After receiving her MD, Dr. Adams was accepted at Johns Hopkins Medical Center for her internal medicine residency training. During her residency, she found the intellectual and technical aspects of gastroenterology appealing and decided to seek sub-specialty training in the field. She later completed gastroenterology fellowship training at Georgetown Medical Center, serving as the only trainee member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy's Committee on Membership Training.
Dr. Adams, who joined GANV in 2002, holds faculty appointments at INOVA Fairfax and Fair Oaks Hospitals. In 2007, she was named one of the area's "Top Doctors" for gastroenterology after only five years in clinical practice. Her clinical interests include general gastroenterology, colorectal cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease, video capsule endoscopy, and women’s health issues.
She is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Medical Society of Virginia, the National Medical Association and the Colon Club. She is on the Washington, D.C., Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of American's Advisory Board.
